The short answer
The best months for Madrid are April to June and September to October: warm days, cool evenings, long light. July and August are hot (average highs above 31 °C) and the city empties in August. Winter is dry, sunny and cold at night.

What it means for the trip
Summer: plan museums and lunch indoors, the evenings outside; dinner in Madrid starts late, around 21:00 to 22:00. Winter: the season of the Teatro Real, the ski weekends in the Pyrenees and the Alps, and the clearest light of the year. Spring and autumn: the Mutua Madrid Open, the Champions League final, Formula 1 at Madring.
